100 years ago

September 23, 1926

The big beet harvest began in Big Horn County on Monday last. 

The harvest is by more than 50 percent the largest ever undertaken in this section and at the guaranteed price of $8.50 per ton, it is going to be a big factor in getting things to going right once more in this part of the state. Beets began arriving early at the dumps and the trains began moving toward the factory at Lovell, which was to begin operations today. 

One of the chances that every broncho buster takes is that he will get wrecked, Johnny Weintz has been taking those chances for a long time and met with his first disaster in a contest on Thursday in Billings when he was thrown off of his horse and had both bones of his right forearm broken.

September 20, 1951

ON Sept 11 the students of Burlington high school held class elections. Class officers are as follows: senior class, Billy King, Harley Myers, Peggy Wilkins and Carrol Neves. Junior class, James Cook, Kay Christianson, Donna Davis and Carolina Burns. Sophomore class, Kenneth Cook, James Briggs, Reuben Lewis and Lucy May. Freshman class, Elnora Trumbull, Darlene Cauffman, Virjean Michaels and Betty Allen. 

Miss Gayle Beck and Miss Sally McNeal have been presented with the curved bar award, the highest honor attainable by the Girl Scouts.  

Only three other Basin girls have received the curved bar in recent years. The others were Mrs. William Davies, the late Miss Darlene Paumer and Miss Norma Rose. 

50 years ago

September 23, 1976

From 3 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Sunday, Security state bank employees scurried to complete a move which would enable them to continue banking without interruption. Monday morning, all were at their posts in the former Highway Café which had somehow miraculously been transformed into a bank and remodeling was going on full steam on the bank building across the street. According to Del Crouse, president of the bank, the bank will nearly double in size after incorporating the former state highway drafting office next door, which is par of the main building. The entry will provide for a protected walk-up banking facility and the outside will have a new look with the use of wood trim. After the remodeling is finished the café building will be razed to construct drive in facilities which will be serviced by underground pneumatic tubes.

It is not set in stone yet, but the current legislative redistricting plans have some changes in store for Big Horn County. The changes are few, but for voters in Burlington, Otto and Frannie, they may be big. The current changes proposed by the Wyoming Legislature were discussed at a meeting in Powell last week. Under the new plan, Burlington and Otto, currently in House district 26 and represented by Rep. Charles Hessenthaler, would move to house district 28. 

Beckett B. Hinckley has been named an associate at the Lathrop and Rutledge law firm in Cheyenne. Hinckley, a 1988 graduate at Riverside High School, graduated from Stanford University in 1992, and from the University of Wyoming school of Law in the spring of 2000.
