Workforce Services awarded $2M to connect workers with second chances

CHEYENNE (WNE) — A fresh start can begin with a good job. 

A new $2 million grant will help the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services connect adults who have been involved in the justice system with training, employment and support — while helping Wyoming employers find skilled workers, a DWS news release said.

Awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Reentry Employment in Skilled Trades, Advanced Manufacturing, Registered Apprenticeships, and Training grant will support adults ages 25 and older as they prepare to enter or return to the workforce. 

Participant enrollment begins in January.

The initiative supports Gov. Mark Gordon’s “The Essentials” framework and comes as Wyoming anticipates 33,000 new jobs by 2032.

Through RESTART, DWS will help participants build skills, overcome obstacles to employment and work toward lasting careers.

“Creating opportunities for Wyoming’s justice- involved population strengthens our workforce, families and communities,” said DWS Director Liz Gagen. “The RESTART grant provides a vital bridge between incarceration and sustainable employment, helping reduce recidivism while connecting local businesses with the skilled workers they need to thrive.”

Wyoming employers can help create those opportunities. DWS is seeking businesses interested in hiring participants and helping them develop skills on the job. 

Available hiring supports may include wage subsidies, the Federal Bonding Program and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit.
