Burlington Huskies take down Little Snake River on the road

The Huskies hit the road to take on rival Little Snake River and snapped the Rattlers winning streak at 22 games. “It was a very exciting win for us, and to do it on their field made it a little sweeter,” said Coach Trent Aagard. “They don’t get beat too often down there, so that was special. They still showed a lot of heart and battled until the end and are still a standard in 6-man football. I have a lot of respect for them and who they are.”

Burlington had an impressive 369 yards on offense with rushing touchdowns from Kole Walker and Parker Cook and receiving touchdowns from Cook, Carsten Schlenker, Trigdon Aagard, and Taft Winters and a defensive touchdown from Chase Bassett. “Our guys really showed up to play. The last time we faced Little Snake was not a good showing for us, we got to think about that all offseasons. I think it helped some of our guys be more focused and work harder over the summer. I thought we played a good hard-nosed physical brand of football. Kole, Carsten, Parker and Chase ran the ball with good vision and physicality. Teddy (Ball), Asher (Loveland), also had some good runs. Trig, Parker, Carsten, Matt (Tempany) and Taft did a good job receiving and that kept LSR defense on their toes. I also saw better executed blocks across the board to spring some bigger runs.” 

With over 65 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3 sacks, Burlington’s defense held the defending 1A champs to just 18 points. “We played aggressive up front and tried to really get after them. Parker, James (McNiven), Matt and Taft did a good job creating pressure up front. Kole and Chase did a good job at cleaning up anything that got out. Trig unfortunately got a little banged up early, but Carsten stepped in and played well on the backend. Him and Chase both were able to pick off a couple of passes. Chase’s pick six came right at the end of the first half, which was awesome because it kept them from scoring on that drive. We were able to make them earn most of their yards.” 

The final score had the Huskies up 46-18. While they are celebrating the win, they are already looking towards the future. “We still have some things to clear up and take care of, but for it being this early in the year, I’m encouraged with where we are. Riverside will be another big game. Last year, it was an ugly defensive slog. We will need to get some things cleaned up this week to prepare for them. I imagine the Rebels will be ready and so we will need to make sure we are prepared for anything,” said Aagard. 

The Huskies will take on the Rebels at home on Friday with a middle school kick off at noon and the Varsity kickoff at 2:00 p.m.

RECEIVING – Burlington 12-163 (Matt Tempany, 5 catches for 57 yards; Taft Winters, 2 catches for 32 yards and 1 TD; Cook, 1 catch for 30 yards and 1 TD; Schlenker, 1 catch for 22 yards and 1 TD; Trigdon Aagard, 2 catches for 14 yards and 1 TD; Bassett, 1 catch for 8 yards. 

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS – Bassett led the team with 26 points (7 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, 1 pass break up, 1 interception) followed by Schlenker with 25 points (5 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles and 2 interceptions) and Walker with 23 points (5 solo tackles, 10 assisted tackles, 3 tackles for loss), Tempany with 15 points (4 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles and 3 tackles for loss) and Winters with 14 points (3 solo tackles, 7 assisted tackles and 1 tackle for loss).
