Remembering the September of 25 years ago

Remember September 2001 before the world stopped turning on Sept. 11? The TV shows: “Friends,” “CSI,” “ER,” “Survivor,” “The West Wing” and “Law and Order.” The top country songs: Toby Keith’s “I’m Just Talkin’ about Tonight”, Blake Shelton’s “Austin”, Brooks and Dunn’s “Only in America.” 

 Pop and rock stations played Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, NSYNC, Green Day and Nickelback. 

Movie theatres were showing “Shrek,” “American Pie 2,” “Moulin Rouge,” “Jurassic Park III,” and “The Fast and the Furious.” 

George W. Bush was our president. 

On Sept. 11, 25 years ago at 6:46 am Mountain Time our world changed forever. None of us will forget that day. Yet from that horrific event something powerful happened: we came together as a nation. People of all ages, sex, colors, backgrounds, creeds, religions, and political parties came together...as Americans. 

American flags and the words “We will never forget” were seen far and wide. Songs on the radio became “Where were you when the world stop turning,” “The Rising,” “Into the Fire,” and “Tuesday Morning.” 

 Our primary election in August was a bit brutal for some. It was very divisive for many. As the anniversary of September 11 approaches, wouldn’t it be great if we could capture the spirit of that time again? A time where we didn’t look at our differences. A time we came together in our love for this nation. 

Voting is a privilege we have as Americans. A privilege that service women and men have fought for. A privilege some have died for. Should we not honor them by recognizing we have differences, but at the same time, embracing our likenesses including being citizens of the United States of America. We have the right and honor to vote for the candidates we want. God bless the United States of America.
