Huskies take win in week zero play

Football season is back and the Huskies hosted their first home game against Farson-Eden on Saturday. 

“Farson doesn’t have good numbers this year, which is unfortunate,” said Coach Trent Aagard. “But I thought the ones they had,  fought hard. With so few kids, that was probably some of the first game-like action they have seen. Hats off to them for their efforts. On our side, I thought we came out with good confidence and intensity. I thought we had good physicality and for zero week, we executed fairly well, especially early when it was our more experienced guys getting reps.” 

Offensively, the Huskies racked up 288 yards with 7 touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns from Kole Walker and Teddy Ball and 5 receiving touchdowns from Carter Dunlap, Bitner Philpot, Matt Tempany and two from Chase Bassett. “Kole set the tone early on with an angry run that would not be denied, and I thought that set the standard for the game. He, Teddy, Trigdon (Aagard), Chase B, Parker (Cook), and Carsten (Schlenker) all ran with some confidence. The young guys did well also, but they are still learning. Blocking up front was pretty good, guys had holes to run through. I thought our passing game was efficient for the most part. Kole, Chase B and Asher (Loveland) had some nice throws. Matt, Taft (Winters), Bitner and Chase B showed good hands and ball skills.” 

Defensively, Burlington had 35 tackles and 4 sacks. “We were aggressive and got a lot of stops in the backfield. Taft, James (McNiven) and Parker, showed up bringing the pressure. Kole, Chase B, Matt and Trig did a great job on the back end to cover things up and fill the running lanes. Others also helped out so it was a good team effort.

All in all, I thought it was a good performance for a zero week game. There are a lot of things we need to clean up and improve, but it was good to see where we are at,” said Aagard. 

Burlington will hit the road this week and play Little Snake River in Baggs on Saturday with the Middle School kicking off at noon and the High School at 2 p.m.

RUSHING – Burlington 18-159 (Kole Walker, 3-59 with 1 touchdown; Teddy Ball 3-42 with 1 touchdown). PASSINGS – Burlington 10-of-16 for 129 yards (Asher Loveland, 4-of-6 for 61 yards; Walker, 4-of-4 for 46 yards). RECEIVING – Bitner Philpott, 2 catches for 42 yards and 1 touchdown. Matt Tempany, 1 catch for 21 yards and 1 touchdown and Chase Bassett 3 catches for 24 yards and 2 touchdowns. 

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS – Taft Winters led the Huskies with 20.5 points (3 solo tackles, 2 assisted tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery, followed by Bassett with 9 points (3 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 2 tackles for loss) and Parker Cook with 9 points (2 solo tackles, 1 assisted, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks).
