100 years ago

Mr. Kemper Ahrens, who went to Yellowstone park with the idea of having a nice vacation and was taken critically ill with appendicitis, with the result of an operation disclosing a bursted appendix, came home Tuesday. He is looking fine and says he believes he’s lucky after all. 

Mr. Bliss Bayne of the Paintrock fish hatchery says that E.C. Burroughs and his son, Toppy, who spent the weekend on the Paintrock came back with one of the best catches of trout he has ever seen caught from that stream. There were some steelheads in the lot.

A double weeding took place at the Methodist church Sunday immediately after the morning services. The parties were Miss Helen Crosby and Ross Schaff and Miss Bertha Johnson and Wentworth Crosby. The Bride in the first case and the groom in the other are brother and sister. All of them were from Worland and they were live on a farm near that place.

August 32, 1951

Folk dance enthusiasts from all parts of the Big Horn Basin flocked to Basin Saturday night for the square dance jamboree sponsored by the Library Square Dance club. As many as 21 squares were dancing simultaneously on the big floor of the high school gymnasium during the evening. Callers from Greybull, Worland and Cody took part in the event which drew many spectators as well as dancers. Polkas, square dances and other folk dances made up the program. 

Miss Marian Adella Boelens, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Boelens, became the bride of Donald Thomas Black, son of Horace Black of Lander and grandson of Mrs. Al G. Metzler of Basin in a ceremony in Greybull Saturday afternoon.

August 26, 1976

Mrs. Ellen Cummings of Basin received word late last week that her son. M Sgt. Douglas Cummings, of Mr. Home AFB, Idaho, was among those deployed to Korea along with a squadron of F111’s in connection with the recent alert there. M Sgt. Cummings is first sergeant of the 366th Munitions Maintenance squadron and has 17½ years in the United States Air Force, He has served in Alaska, England, Vietnam and now Korea. 

Debbie Davis, Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Davis of Basin, is attending the Wyo. State Fair this week where she is serving as a council member of the 20-member State Fair 4-H Camp Council. Debbie and the rest of the council have spent the last 12 months planning the one-week event, which started last Monday, August 23.

The Big Horn County Commission took the first step in helping county farmers cope with this summer’s drought Tuesday by declaring the county a disaster area. “Due to the lack of water agribusiness in Big Horn County is in a state of disaster,” the commissioners wrote in their declaration. Commission Chairman Don Russell said the declaration “starts the ball rolling for area farmers to become eligible for government relief. 

The county has hired six individuals to staff the new Big Horn County Jail. They include: Lee Hallsted, Tim Metro, Debbie Cook, George Marcus, Renee Hanson, and David Clark.
