100 years ago

January 14, 1926

Mr. Philip Griesinger and his boys of the Basin High School stock judging team, Delbert Jones, Ellsworth Christiansen, and Wesley Thorley, returned on Saturday last from Laramie. The Rustler is proud of the work of these boys at Laramie and extends sincere congratulations to them and to their instructor. 

It’s a privilege to live in the Big Horn Basin. While the storm of Monday was quite a severe one with lots of snow falling and drifting and Monday evening it looked as if we were going to have some real winter weather, nevertheless Tuesday morning dawned clear and bright with the usual mild temperature we have been enjoying all winter.

January 11, 1956

A huge bobcat, trapped in the Hyattville area by Chester Mercer and Henry Walrath, is being mounted for presentation to Basin High School as a trophy for its new gymnasium. Mr. Walrath, secretary of the Basin Sportsmen’s Club, said Tuesday that the animal, now in a Cody taxidermist’s shop, will be formally presented to the school during halftime exercises at one of its regularly scheduled basketball games. 

Superintendent R. Kilzer of the Basin schools has announced the added subjects which will be taught in the high school during the second semester. Driver’s training will be offered to those old enough to get a license. Wyoming history will be offered this year. Mrs. Tacetta Walker, author of a published history of the Big Horn Basin, will be the teacher. 

50 years ago

January 15, 1976

As part of a statewide safety project, Wyoming Highway Department maintenance crews in the Basin area have buried 34 guardrail ends, according Robert Herzog, district construction and maintenance engineer at Basin.  

PFC Glen Davis left Tuesday by plane from Worland for Camp Pendleton, Calif., where he is stationed with the U.S. Marines. He spent Christmas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis. Davis, who enlisted in the Marines last May, has just completed special training in helicopter mechanics. 

Miss Mary Batenhorst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Batenhorst, has accepted a position in the English department of the junior high school at Evanston and began teaching there this week. Miss Batenhorst was formerly employed by a Rawlins bank.

Eleven University of Wyoming students from south Big Horn County have been named to the 2000 fall semester academic dean’s and freshman Honor Roll. Included on the list are Kimberlee Baxter, Jeri Claudson, Patricia Fritz and Lance Hopkin, all of Basin; Mindy Yorgason of Burlington, Karah Winters Stevens, of Otto; Dian Hamilton and Douglas Hamilton, both of Hyattville; and Debbie Crist, Sara Dahlberg and Heidi Wiser, all of Greybull. 

Hazel Vanlandingham recently joined the ranks of Greybull business owners when she purchased the Hers and Sirs beauty salon from longtime owner Shirley Kershner. 

Representatives of the Montana/Wyoming Association of Railroad Passengers who are seeking to establish a Denver-Seattle passenger train route will be making a swing through northern Wyoming later this week to drum up support for the idea.
