With one final week of the regular track season, the Huskies are seeing their hard work pay off. “It’s so nice to see so many of our athletes peaking at the right time of the year,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “So many of them have embraced some of the harder workouts these past few weeks and now it’s really starting to show.”

Sarah McNiven, Kellen Winters and Kelli McNiven qualified and attended the Track Classic on Friday in Casper. “It was a nice honor for them. We didn’t see any other 1A schools being represented there. Kellen took advantage of the great competition and broke our school mile record by 6 seconds and Sarah took 2nd in the state, going against the very best high jumpers in Wyoming.”

On Saturday, the team competed in Lovell with qualifiers for State and personal bests. “Our throwers continue to improve each week. Matt Tempany threw an impressive 42-foot throw in the shot put, qualifying him for State. He also got a personal best in the discus. Other personal bests included Layla Baer in the 100 meter and Adison Haslam in the 200 meters. One of the most impressive runs of the day came from Bradford Davidson in the mile. He surpassed his personal best by 11 seconds, running a 4:36 mile. Claire Philpott also qualified in the mile on the girls’ side.”

K. McNiven and K. Winters came back on Saturday, and both came within two-tenths of a second of the school’s 800-meter records. “That’s not a lot of time in a longer race like the 800 meters. They were a little disappointed, but they’re both looking forward to going after the record again this week.

I love this time of year. The Region and State meets are right around the corner. It’s fun seeing the kids get excited about showing what they can do on a bigger stage. I’m always impressed how ready they are to step up and perform their best,” said Olson.

The Huskies will head to Thermopolis on Friday for the Bobcat Invitational.
