Time is now to cement your legacy with bricks or pavers

The Basin Heritage Commons is hoping that more people will sign up for bricks and pavers for the commons project. The goal is to have them purchased and engraved by the middle of May.  The completed bricks/pavers will be used for the garden paths. Construction is planned to start in late May. The money from the bricks/pavers goes towards the commons. Danae Bales, the president of the Basin Heritage Initiative is asking those that want some to please come in now. 

Bales explained, “Basin Heritage Commons is a labor of love. We have many reasons to be proud of who we are as a community. The true foundation of this space isn’t just the land—it’s the people. It is also the stories, values, legacies of Basin’s families and neighbors. They are the very heart of our history and culture. While Basin doesn’t have a museum yet, we are creating an outdoor heritage museum that celebrates the founders of Basin… tells our story. It reminds many of us of the massive amount of effort and determination of the people that built this town.” 

The commons area will also feature a mural, benches, and history including that of the native foliage that will be planted. Bales added, “I want to remind our community what it took to create Basin, and hopefully by remembering and taking pride in that history, we can continue to keep our wonderful little town and educate our young people about it.” 

Of the bricks/pavers that have been purchased, there is a wide variety of themes. From family names, wedding dates, brands and even a few dogs.  Bales noted, “By purchasing an engraved brick or paver, you’re not only helping build the walkways and gardens of the Commons—you’re weaving your own story into its landscape. Whether it’s your family name, a message of hope, or a tribute to someone you love, each inscription becomes a visible thread in the fabric of our community. It’s a lasting way to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the generations yet to walk these paths.” 

She continued, “This is something special for our town. I am excited for the people and businesses who are wanting to be a part of it. With the addition of the mural, it’s creating an all-encompassing space that really celebrates who we are.” 

Bales noted that she is proud to be from Basin but sometimes it takes leaving to really appreciate what was and to now be able to see the wonderful things for what they are. She is happy to be raising her children here. “Basin is special. Our entire board is made up of people who believe in this community,” Bales said.   

Samples of bricks, pavers and plans for the gardens can be viewed in the office of South Big Horn County Water District. Any questions or people wanting to buy a brick or paver can call at 307-275-0419 or come to the office from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. Bales again stressed, the sooner the better.
