Soup with Seniors brings students, seniors together

The first Monday of each month, the local homeschooler group provides a soup lunch for seniors. The lunch, which starts at noon, is held at the Basin First Baptist and is open to all seniors. 

One of the parents, Monica VanderPloeg said the idea came from a person who visited the church this summer. “We thought it would be a good idea to break down generational barriers,” she said. “Kids getting used to serving others and getting to talk to people not their age.” 

Homeschool student Grace VanderPloeg said, “We just want to connect with our senior citizens and get to know them.” She said one of her favorite things to do is ask questions of the seniors, such as, “What is your favorite birthday memory?” 

Student Oliva Suiter says she, too, likes to interact with the seniors because it is fun.  That thought was echoed by Lily Brown. She likes meeting new people, too.  Her brother Willet explained, “It’s a good time to get with fellow believers.” 

 Elijah Suiter said he serves sometimes and talks at the table other times.  Once during the talking portion, he was surprised to learn the senior didn’t have any pets. 

Highland Brown’s favorite part is coming to the church to eat. 

Lanie Suiter said her favorite part is “sitting with old people and meeting them.”

One of the seniors, Pati McKim said she thinks it is neat kids want to get to know “us old people.” 

Each family with a student takes turns making the soup. 

The students take turn serving. 

The next lunches are Jan. 6, Feb. 3 and March 3, 2025.
