Small Husky squad takes on big schools in Powell
A small Burlington crew faced some stiff competition in Powell on Saturday. With only 10 boys and 10 girls, they were still able to place eighth in both divisions.
“The ACT test took all of our sophomores and most of our juniors, but the kids that were able to make it to Saturday’s meet performed well and set quite a few personal bests,” said Coach Ryan Olson.
On the girls’ side, Sarah McNiven won the high jump and Kelli McNiven took third in the 3200-mile run.
“I like our girls team. They come to practice every night with great positive attitudes and ready to work. They have a good combination of freshmen talent and upper-classmen leadership. Sarah had her best jumps of the season, jumping 5’3, winning the event and just missing out on breaking her own school record. Lauren Gotfredson improved her discus throw by four feet and continues to see her hard work in practice pay off.”
On the boys’ side, Kellen Winters won the 1600-meter run. Paul McNiven got third in the 800, the 4x100 relay team took fourth and Taft Winters took fourth in the discus.
“The boys continue to chase automatic qualifying times and distances, hoping to be in the mix at the end of the year for another state title. We’re as healthy as we’ve been since the beginning of the year, which makes it nice as we try to stack some tough workouts nearing the halfway point of the season. Kellen knocked four seconds off his mile time and is now only two seconds away from breaking the school record. Hyrum McNiven and Brian O’Barr both had personal bests in the triple jump and Michael Broederlow continues to improve in the discus, getting a personal best of 82-05,” Olson said.
“I’m really enjoying this team this year. It’s nice to have great athletes, but it’s even better when they’re also good kids. They’re nice, hard-working, positive kids that make our jobs as coaches really rewarding,” said Olson.
The Huskies will compete at the Shoshoni HS Invite on Friday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and running events starting at noon and in Greybull on Saturday at the Bill Gerrard Memorial Invite. Field events and running events will both start at 10 a.m.
