Riverside gridders are King of the Jungle in homecoming game against Shoshoni
Riverside won its homecoming football game, beating Shoshoni 36-19. “The offensive line, tight ends and other running backs played an unbelievable game providing running lanes for Ty Strohschein while giving Josh Wildman time in the passing game,” said Coach Jason Mitchell.
After stuffing Shoshoni’s first possession, Riverside took over at its own 43-yard line. The offensive line made some holes for Strohschein to dodge through and he was able to run it all the way to the endzone on the first play. This gave Riverside a 6-0 lead with 9:54 on the clock. Shoshoni quickly responded with a touchdown at PAT kick to move in front at the 5:56 mark. But with 56 seconds left, Ty Strohschein got the ball and ran it 36 yards for the touchdown, giving Riverside a 12-7 lead.
Josh Wildman had several completed passes to Hayden Paxton to increase the Riverside’s lead to 20-7. With 2:11 left in the third, Shoshoni scored its second touchdown, but the Rebels blocked the kick, making it 20-13.
Rebels defense set some solid roadblocks and Shoshoni couldn’t make it into the endzone. Avery Clifford got the sack to cause Shoshoni a turnover on fourth down. With 2:24 left in the third, Ty Strohschein stripped the ball from Shoshoni’s running back and pounced on it for a takeaway.
In the fourth quarter, the Rebels were able to get the offense going and move the ball better. Wildman completed a long pass to Haydon Paxton that moved them in the redzone. Ty Strohchein carried the ball in for the touchdown. Wildman completed another pass to Paxton for the extra two points, bringing the score to 28-13 with 9:40 left in the game. Shoshoni scored with 6:47 to pull closer. Riverside fumbled a kickoff return and Shoshoni recovered it. The Rebel defense took charge and with the help of Avery Clifford’s sack, Shoshoni turned the ball over to the Rebels on downs. Wildman connected with Hyson Hill to complete a pass. Then Strohschein carried it into the endzone, and Paxton caught another pass for an extra two.
“We definitely weren’t immune to the distractions that often come as part of Homecoming week but found a way to settle in and still come away with a win,” said Coach Mitchell.
Next up is Rocky Mountain, which comes to Basin for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Oct. 6. Mitchell called the Grizzlies “a good opponent” and said his team “will need to fix a few things defensively versus a talented group of kids that have known success their whole careers.”
It will be a military appreciation game. There will be a silent auction, with proceeds going to Tunnel to Towers and Project Recovery. Past and present military members are welcome to a free item at the concession stand. If you’d like to make a donation, you can do so in Basin, Greybull and Worland.
