Rebels break through against Kaycee Buckaroos
The Riverside Rebels righted the ship last week, throttling Kaycee 58-6 for their first win of the season.
The Rebels never trailed, leading 18-0 after one and 50-6 at the half, and a big reason why was their running game, which averaged 11.6 yards per carry and more than 290 total yards.
“We communicated our blocking assignments well, which in turn helped us run the ball,” said Coach Matthew Jensen, whose team rushed for more than 290 yards, averaging 11.6 yards per carry. “Our play action passing was timely and had a couple TDs through the air as well.”
Brendan Powell was the leading rusher, gaining 135 yards with two touchdowns on five carries. Jaxson Womack rushed 10 times for 79 yards and three touchdowns. Corbyn Godfrey gained 79 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Through the air, Gavyn Cervantes completed 5-of-9 passes for 58 yards. One of those went to Zack Kuntz for a 20-yard touchdown.
On the other side of the ball, Jensen said, “We played excellent team defense, consistently getting six players to the ball forcing multiple four-and-outs and generating multiple turnovers, including a pick six.”
Defensive standouts included Paul Stone, with two assisted tackles and two forced fumbles; Kuntz, four solo tackles, five assisted tackles, one fumble recovery; Powell, three solos, four assists, one tackle for loss and a sack; Camden Schriner, two solos, four assists, one tackle for loss and one sack, and Cervantes, four solos along with a 30-yard “pick six.”
It’s homecoming week at RHS. The Rebels face Ten Sleep Friday.
“They’re coming off a solid performance against Meeteetse, so we must be prepared in all three phases of the game,” said Jensen. “This conference game is crucial; we need a complete four-quarter effort to build momentum for the rest of the season as we work to continue our push to the playoffs.”
