Pastor corner - Wedding supper

I don’t usually think about weddings in the fall or winter. I usually consider them in spring and summer. But, today, I’m reading Matthew 22 about the Wedding Supper of the Lamb.

How appropriate Jesus’ first miracle was performed in Cana of Galilee at a wedding. The family had run out of wine and Jesus had servants fill six waterpots with water. When they were full, they brought a glass full to the head of the wedding celebration who said, “Most people serve the best wine first and then the lesser wines after most people have well drunk, but you have saved the best until last.”

Young men want to become engaged to a young lady are generally eager to finish the wedding and start living together. Instead of building a house, he might probably throw up a tent in eager anticipation instead of building something substantial in which to live.

Jesus presented his disciples a New Testament like a ketubah, a book of promises which he promised to fulfill if the bride would accept his proposal. After they toasted the covenant they both agreed to, he would depart for his father’s house to prepare for the future day. She would read and reread the ketubah, the promises until he returned.

The young man would build their future home annexed to the father’s house. He could not say he had done a good job and was ready to return for his bride, because the father only held the assessment.

The father alone would tell the son when he could get his bride and bring her home. For this reason, Jesus did not know the day nor the hour of his return but the Father only (Matthew 24:36)

For this reason, Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you. I go and prepare a place for you that where I am there you may be also and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also.”

The ten virgins, the bridesmaids, and the groomsmen coming at midnight and looking for a lamp burning in the window of the bride’s home. They were to shout and blow a trumpet to announce their arrival. Only half the brides’ maids were ready with oil to last for the wedding supper. (Matthew 25:7)

Ephesians 5:22 – 24, mentions the submission of the bride to her husband. Some omit the submission of the husband to his wife many people get caught up on the submitting of the wives to the husbands neglecting the submission of the husbands to the wives and fail to see the true picture is of Christ the husband and the Church as his bride, his wife. (Ephesians 5:31 – 33)

But the wedding itself occurs after the catching up of the church (1 Thessalonians 4:17) during the seven years of tribulation on the earth described in the book of Revelation. There is a crown reserved for those who look forward to and hasten to the return of the Lord. (2 Timothy 4:8)

But the passage in Matthew 22 pointed out people who came unprepared wearing inappropriate apparel to the wedding. Worse, some who attended didn’t even bother to wear the special wedding garments provided for them by the host.

Reminds me of the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned, realized they were exposed and made coverings for themselves of fig leaves (their own righteousness (Isaiah 64:6)). God told them the fig leaves were not good enough and killed an animal (a Lamb?) and used the skin to make them coverings for their nakedness. He does the same for us; He creates robes of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10) to be worn to the marriage supper of the lamb.
