May 29, 1924

Mr. J.S. Tebbs of Cowley, who has the contract for grading and graveling that section of the Yellowstone Highway which begins at the D.D. Peters corner and runs north three miles, is on the hob and work is starting at once. This will carry the hard surface road over Elk Creek and the bad curves at Elk Creek will be straightened out, making a splendid improvement. With the completion of this stretch of highway, about five miles will remain ungraveled between Basin and Manderson.
An overlooked item in our issue of this week past was regarding the efforts of the Civic Committee of the Woman’s Club of Basin to clean up Mountain View Cemetery a week ago last Sunday. The few who were there did good work and the cemetery looked much tidier upon completion of their work.

May 26, 1949

Mr. and Mrs. Fred O’Brien have announced the engagement of their daughter, Suzanne, to Arthur J. Batenhorst, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Batenhorst. The couple will be married June 23 at St. Philip’s Catholic church in Basin.
R.W. Russell, clerk of the Town of Basin, announced this week that the municipal government has secured approximately 50 steel barrels from the Stanolind Oil Company for use as rubbish containers by local citizens. Tops have been removed from the barrels to make satisfactory garbage cans and the barrels are available to persons who need replacements. The cost is $4 each, which equals their cost to the city.
With the end of school comes much rejoicing for some at the children, hence the shooting of firecrackers on Friday. However, it was rather painful for Jerry Bullinger, who didn’t let go of his firecracker soon enough. Jerry’s forefinger and thumb were quite painfully burned.

David William Hill, son of Mrs. June Hill of Moose, Wyo., and former Basin resident, has been included on the honor roll for the winter quarter at Utah University in Logan, Utah.
High School Principal Everett March announced this week that a scholarship has been awarded to Lois Ann Yoos to Point Loma College in San Diego, Cal.
Bruce Ellis spent the Memorial Day weekend visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ellis, and his grandmother, Mrs. Josh Ellis. He spent several days here with his brother, Brent, before returning to Brigham Young University at Provo, Utah. Brian Ellis was unable to be here as he is to undergo surgery for the second time on his leg. It is hoped that Mr. and Mrs. Brian Ellis will be able to join their family in Basin before Brent returns to Germany.

Randall M. Lowe of Basin, with Try County Telephone, has been appointed to the State Telecommunications Council. Lowe will serve a four-year term ending March 1, 2003
Mike and Patrice Riley of Burlington are the parents of a son, Dillon Patrick, born May 14 at West Park Hospital in Cody.
Seven University of Wyoming students from south Big Horn County are listed on the 1999 spring semester President’s Honor Roll. They include: Justin Hopkin, Joshua King, Nicole Nicholson, and Lee Ann Werbelow, of Basin; and Debbie Crist, Ginnie Larson and Michael McColloch, of Greybull.
