The following from Laramie was received too late to appear in last week’s issue of the Rustler: among the contributions published in “The Wyoming Quill,” the University of Wyoming Quill Club literary magazine, are a number of verses by Miss Zeva Smith of Basin and prominent among the popular co-ed students at the State University.
The county commissioners are having more trouble. Last week, after continued high water in the Big Horn, about 70-feet of the west approach to the bridge at Greybull went out, causing quite a loss. At present, people are getting back and forth over a foot bridge, but there is no vehicular travel permitted. It will probably take several weeks before the damage can be corrected.

April 14, 1949

Water for irrigation was diverted from the Big Horn River into the Big Horn Canal at Worland on Monday, Canal Superintendent Harry H. Robertson reports. The flow reached the canal’s end at the Greybull River on Tuesday.  R.W. Russell, the Basin town clerk, reported on Wednesday that water will be turned into town ditches as soon as they can be cleaned. Crews are expected to begin work late this week to make ready for the flow.
Between 50 and 60 persons attended a reception at the Qynona hotel Tuesday evening, given in honor of Basin by representatives of Challenger Airlines. Work is ongoing on regular mail service to the area. Representing the airline company at the affair were O.A. Byrne, Asst. President; Lorenzo Linville, Secretary; Miss Irene Replogle, Chief Stewardess; and Miss Jean Marie Merriott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.G. Merriott, a stewardess with the line.
Raiford A. Brundage was elected president of the Basin Volunteer Fire Department Monday evening. Reuben Reifschneider was elected Vice President. George H. Hoffman is the new Secretary and V.P. Irwin was chosen Treasurer.

Kathleen Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George (Pat) Brown, and Marilyn Darr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Darr, new members of Iron Skull, Junior Service Honorary were initiated at Torchlight Laurel ceremonies at the University of Wyoming recently.
Steve Tharp, a senior at the University of Wyoming, has been notified of his acceptance in the Veterinary Medical College of Colorado State University of Fort Collins, Colo., one of only four Wyoming students to be accepted this year. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Tharp and an honor graduate of Manderson-Hyattville High School.

Georgia Antley of Basin, a senior at the University of Wyoming, will be inducted into Phi Beta, Kappa for demonstrating excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Antley is a 1995 graduate of Riverside High School and the daughter of Sue Antley and Bryce Antley of Basin.
Over 150 people attended the “Look” student art exhibit held Apr. 9 at the Big Horn County Fairgrounds in Basin. Alicia Keith won the Superintendent’s Choice award and also the Principal’s Choice Award. Betsy Crosby took first in the People’s Choice voting, Second went to Ann Godfrey, Third went to Jessica Mullins.
