A great increase in the use of trucks for beet hauling was noticed last year, and general satisfaction of those who used them points to a more general use of trucks this fall, according to a statement made by Mr. Geo B. Cooper manager of the Cooper Motor Company. It would appear that not only growers with long hauls, but many with short hauls have found that truck economical for delivering beets, the advantage being more pronounced with the longer hauls. There are many evidences that the truck is greatly increasing the distance from a beet dump within which beets can be profitably raised. 

Mr. John Seaman was in from Hyattville and informed us that work started on Tuesday on the big ranch house he is building on the former W.J. Booth place.

September 6, 1951

Construction of a state-and-county cooperative road in the Burlington area to connect the Basin Burlington secondary highway and the Park County road leading to the Thermopolis Cody road was for the second tie in two months the main topic of the monthly Basin Chamber of Commerce meeting Tuesday. 

Mrs. Edward Boelens received the trophy for Wyoming’s champion home canning expert at the state fair in Douglas last week. She also received the Sure-Jell award for the best display of jellies. She and Mr. Boelens returned from Douglas Saturday. Both worked in the Big Horn county booth throughout the fair. Mr. Boelens drove the truck which carried Big Horn county exhibits to Douglas. 

Enrollment in the Basin public schools for the 1951-52 term has been released and shows the following: 103 students are enrolled in the high school, 52 in the junior high and 190 in the first six grades.

K. Warren Brome, 53, newspaperman and prominent citizen died Tuesday afternoon at Washakie Memorial hospital in Worland. Brome graduated from Basin High School in 1941 and attended Junior college in Pueblo, Colorado and received further schooling in Boston. He was trying his hand at writing in Boston when he was called home because of the death of his father in 1945. After working at Wheeler’s Market for a time, he began working for the Basin Republican-Rustler in 1946. 

There was not hint of smoke at 4:30 Wednesday morning when Jean Sova left for work with her teen-aged children still sleeping in the trailer, At 6:00 a.m. however Mrs. Sova’s daughter Georgia thought she smelled smoke. When she looked out she saw flames leaping from the back of the trailer. She awakened her brother and called the fire department.

Additional parking will be available at the Big Horn County Courthouse in Basin possibly as soon as this fall. County commissioners last month agreed to purchase two lots on West C street across from the courthouse and develop the property as a parking lot. The county has agreed to pay Basin resident Charlene Anderson $10,000 for the two lots, the commissioners said.
