November 19, 1925

Beet growers of the Basin-Manderson district are still at work getting their crop out from under the heavy snow which still lies on the ground; it is said that most growers will have their work finished by the end of the week. Some beets are going to be left in the ground. Charlie Renner’s help quit on Monday it is possible he may not get any more out.

The following students of vocational agriculture will represent Basin High School in the annual corn and potato judging contest to be held in Worland: Delbert Jones, Elwood Porter, Wesley Thorley and Bert Spencer. 

75 years ago

November 16, 1950

A noticeable and exceedingly unpleasant taste made its appearance in the city water supply during the weekend, causing a general public complaint. The taste, which at periods had made the water almost undrinkable, has been variously described as chlorine and iodine in nature. Mayor E.W. Kinghorn stated that the town council is convinced the taste originates from a foreign substance introduced into the Big Horn River some distance upstream from Basin. The mayor assured residents it was not from the purification process. Dr. Claude Raffl, when queried, stated that he has seen no toxic effects resulting from the substance. He added that if it is believed dangerous or more than momentary, a sample of the water should be sent to Cheyenne for analysis. 

Replacement of the present library structure is being considered. Shortly after construction of the present library in 1909, uneven settling of the building necessitated bracing it throughout with iron pipe. The crumbling condition of the foundation now makes dangerous any further attempt to repair the building, it has been reported.

November 20, 1975

The honor roll for Basin high school was announced this week. The A honor roll includes: Jeri Black, Lynelle Galasso, Larry Lassiter, Marty Wright, Amy Gibler, Letitia Williamson, Tammy Christopherson, Debbie Dellos, Holly Dill, Doug Martin, Lory Nelson, Leslie Cowan, Debra Gilmore, Shelley Gish, Dennis Graham, Bart Ingalls and Michael Lopp.

The 1975 sugar beet harvest in central Big Horn County ended last week with sugar content reported higher than first estimated and yields down somewhat. Harvesting was made difficult by wet weather and frozen ground, particularly in the Burlington and Emblem areas.

November 16, 2000

Larry Snook will retire as superintendent of Big Horn County School District No. 4 at the end of the 2000-01 school year. The board also accepted the resignation of Jim Gibbs as high school volleyball coach. 

Burlington residents will benefit from more than $130,000 worth of life-saving equipment and a new fire hall to house the new purchases. Burlington Fire Chief Butch Krause said Monday Big Horn County Fire District #4 has received three grants, including grant of $1,149 for the purchase of medical equipment, $96,000 to build a new fire hall, and a grant of $35,000 to go toward the purchase of a new ambulance.
