Organizations launch postcard campaign in defense of Roadless Rule

CODY (WNE) — For those concerned about the proposal to open some protected national forest lands to development, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and Wyoming Wilderness Association are hosting comment-writing sessions.

The GYC said, in a statement, that the proposed rollback of the 25-year-old Roadless Rule will threaten some of the wildest, most pristine forest lands in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem; millions of acres of spectacular, undeveloped places are at risk of development.

The organization is urging members of the public to speak up for their favorite wild places and write a postcard urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to retain the Roadless Rule. 

These lands are the source of drinking water, home to iconic wildlife, and the heart of outdoor recreation heritage, it said.

WWA, in its event announcement, called roadless areas “a significant and integral piece to the wildland network here in Wyoming and across the country,” noting that about half of all National Forest land is already open to drilling, logging, and mining, while less than 20 percent is protected as wilderness.

GYC said the postcard campaign will show the broad and bipartisan support for the Roadless Rule that protects the lands that make the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem a global icon.
