Local artists first show in Greybull last week

Dominic Skillman, Josiah Skillman, Robbie Skillman and Brianna Laird were the featured artists at a Feb. 3 reception held at the Skillman Art Studio. 

Dominic had never showcased his photography before. He has been taking photos for three years and tends to focus on industrial subjects. His family takes him to spots where there is broken down machinery, industrial sites, etc.  While those are his favorite subjects to shoot, he did have one photo of a horse that visited their camping spot on the Bighorns every day. Charlie Baumer, an attendee, said his favorites were photos with trains and the old firehall; he also liked the framed poems written by Josiah. 

Laird’s art is skull art. She started Breezy’s Bones 11 years ago. Her dad found an antelope skull on their property. It was buried in the mud. He brought it to her. She started to put beads on it, then quickly realized she lacked the patience for beading. Like Dominic, it was her first stand-alone art show. She has been one of the artists of the Big Horn County Art Guild shows in the past. Her skulls may be seen at the Art Studio or on her Breezy’s Bones FB or Instagram pages. 

Josiah’s art is a combo of photos and his poems. In some cases, he wrote the poems with the pictures in mind. This is the first time he has been featured in a show. “The story behind that is my Dad said, “We are doing a showing of your poetry in two months. We’re going to put your poetry up on the wall.’ I told him I didn’t think so. His response was I didn’t have a choice.” He took the photos with his phone. 

Robbie’s art is photography and poetry. Like the other three he has never had an official showcase of his work. His photos are black and white. He loves the work of photographer Ansel Adams. He took inspiration from Adams’s work. Robbie has been a writer. He has written songs which lend his way into poetry. He added that his son Josiah’s poetry inspired him to write as well. “He started doing it and I thought I can do this too.” 

The art featured is available for purchase at the Art Studio for the next two months. It is located at 513 Greybull Ave in Greybull.
