Letter to the Editor: Review of safety net budget cuts will give you an eye-full

Dear Editor: 

I was wondering the other day what next year’s budget looks like and what programs were proposed to be cut by the republican party. Boy did I get an eye full. 

For your fact checkers here is where I got my information Newsweek April 3, 2026, List of Programs 2027 Budget Proposal would cut. Department of agriculture, National Institute of food and agricultural formula (510m) cut. Rural Business service grants (82m) cut, community facilities grant earmarks (659m) cut. Department of education Over 2 dozen K-12 grant programs, consolidated or eliminated (8.5b) cut. 

As for the department of energy anything to do with improving green energy cut. Department of Health and Human Services LIEAP cut and eliminated, unbelievable, Hospital preparedness program (240m) and the agency for healthcare research and quality (129m).

 Here’s two worrying ones, Eliminate the teen pregnancy prevention program, no more trying to prevent teen pregnancy I mean after all we are under babied, get em while they are young. I wonder how many of these teens will be on public assistance. 

The second is Community services block grant (775m) cut. Department of Homeland Security, the Office of Civil Rights and civil liberties cut. Department of housing and urban development, the community development block grant (3.3b) cut, home investment partnership program (1.3b). Department of Labor, Job Corps (eliminated, 1.6b). These cuts are just proposals but wow. These are just a few of the list. 

Meals on wheels is in danger of being cut because of community services block grant cuts. The republican party because of sweeping federal legislation free and reduced lunches are in danger, but of course Megan Degenfelder and the leader of the freedom caucus Rachel Rodriguiz-William…oops sorry Rachel Williams, refused to feed impoverished children during the summer for 3 years. Trump also cut funding for food banks. 

Mrs. Williams also wanted accessory food items removed like salt, and she was on the bill SJ007 to take our health care rights away.

If you want to know about women’s rights go to Jessica Valenti on Substack and no you don’t need a subscription, and you can read what the government is trying to do with women. How birth control is on the chopping block the government said they are abortifacients and natural methods are preferred. 

Here is one how about no tax on period products. We will be voting in November on a 50% property tax reduction, and we will vote it through but remember when the legislation is in session be ready for a sales tax to make up the 50%. 

So, the money you save will be eaten up in sales tax. We need to ask our legislatures where they stand. If you saw Thursday’s speech boy was that some crazy stuff.
