Lady Huskies win two more on the road
Two more wins for the Lady Huskies as they took to the road for the short drive to Greybull and Basin.
Burlington was in Greybull Tuesday for the annual Pink Game. “It was a good competitive game,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. “We knew that we would need to guard Perla Rodriguez on the inside and be ready for their 3s from the outside.”
The Lady Huskies dug in deep with their press and defense and outscored Greybull 22-6 in the first quarter, but struggled in the second quarter. “The girls started out great, they were able to press and get some good steals, especially Paxton Philpott. In the second quarter, we were trying to fast break and not making great decisions with our passes.”
After halftime, Burlington settled in and controlled the rest of the game, winning 65-21. “They had a good, strong, second half. All of the girls were able to contribute through defense, rebounding or points. We continue to out rebound the teams that we play and that’s great to keep seeing throughout the season,” said Haslam.
Philpott had a fantastic game with 21 points, 11 steals, seven assists and nine rebounds. Adison Haslam added 14 points and Naomi McNiven added 12 points and seven steals. Defensively, Sarah McNiven had 13 rebounds, six assists and six points and Dalley Bassett had 10 rebounds.
Friday in Basin, the Lady Huskies knew they would need to be ready to play. “We knew this would be our toughest conference matchup and we needed to come out strong and play for four quarters. We knew that we would need to focus on Brooklyn Paxton. She is a great all around player. We have done a pretty good job of shutting her down in the past, so we wanted to continue that in this game.”
Burlington started slow and ran into foul trouble early on but picked up in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Rebels 21-3. Moving forward from there, they held Riverside at bay and won 63-20. “We really struggled with our inside shots this game. We came away with 26 offensive rebounds just trying to put our shots back in the hoop. It was frustrating but the girls stuck with it. We were able to work on our man press throughout the game. Every player that played in the game added some points to the board for us and this was a good game for us as far as turnovers go. We had quite a few less than in the past, so that’s a good improvement to see. We are controlling the pace of the game better and not making as many mistakes.
“Naomi (McNiven) had a great game. She worked her tail off on defense and made some great plays on offense,” said Haslam. N. McNiven had 16 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 8 steals. S. McNiven also added 16 points and an impressive 19 rebounds. Hailee Winterholler added in 10 points and 8 rebounds and Bassett added 8 rebounds and 7 points.
Burlington will have two more conference games this week, heading to Meeteetse on Friday for a tipoff at 5 p.m. and Saturday will see St. Stephens at home with a 1:30 p.m. tipoff.
