The Lady Huskies faced Fort Washakie for the second time on Thursday. The conference game was held in Burlington and was a quick win for the home team with a final score of 25-9, 25-14, 25-11. “We were able to work on our serving technique and it was a nice warm up for the weekend,” said Coach Erin Bassett.
Friday and Saturday, the Bobcat Invite was in Thermopolis. “The timing of this tournament is nice because it comes in the middle of our conference play and gives us a chance to play teams from other parts of the state,” said Bassett.
Burlington started the day against Greybull. After a slow start, the Lady Huskies gained some momentum and won the second set, splitting with Greybull 21-9, 21-20. That momentum carried them through a sweep with Big Piney, winning both games 21-18, 21-12. With their final game of pool play, the Lady Huskies faced Saratoga, losing two close games 21-19, 21-17. “Overall, we had a lot of hustle from each of the girls, both JV and Varsity. Paxton Philpott had an especially good day. Her passing, both serve receive and digging was exceptional. She had an awesome day in the back row, but also was great on the net, leading the team in kills for the day,” said Bassett.
Friday’s games earned the Lady Huskies a spot in the Silver bracket where they matched up against Wind River. In another tight game, Burlington won in three 21-25, 25-22, 15-13. The win sent them to the bracket championship game against Kemmerer. “The sets were back and forth, Kemmerer did a good job attacking the ball out of system and that caught us on our heels a few times. It was such a good experience for our team to play those long rallies with lots of net play, we don’t always see a lot of that in our conference. In the end, Kemmerer walked away with the win, but I was proud of our girls hanging in there and battling for every point,” said Bassett.
The Lady Huskies will be in Basin on Friday and Saturday for the 1A Riverside Jamboree. Friday games will be against Saratoga in the elementary gym, JV at 11:30 a.m. and Varsity at 12:30 p.m. and in the community Center against Kaycee, JV at 3:30 p.m. and Varsity at 4:30. Saturday, Varsity will play Arvada in the High school gym at 11 a.m. and against Upton back in the elementary gym at 2 p.m. for the JV and 3 p.m for Varsity.
