Lady Huskies earn first two Conference wins of the season

Burlington hosted its first conference games of the season, facing Meeteetse Friday and Dubois Saturday. Both teams fell to the Lady Huskies in similar fashion.

“Our conference is really down this year and it’s tough to get good conference games during our season. We knew that the games were going to be fairly low key, which is good, because it was a long week for our team and community. It was a long week of emotions and sickness to say the least. We really missed having one of our seniors throughout the week,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam.

“Meeteetse didn’t field a team last year. We knew that it was going to be a game where everyone would get playing time. These games are hard because you still want your team to be able to ‘play’ but you also don’t want to run the other team into the ground. Our starters were able to start and play for a bit each quarter, but it was mainly our freshman and sophomore that played throughout the game. All the girls played well and we were able to work on several of our offensive plays and a few different things on defense.”

The Lady Huskies beat Meeteetse 52-8, holding the Longhorns to zero points in the first half. Paxton Philpott led the team with eight points, Sarah McNiven and Lauren Gotfredson both scored seven points and Adison Haslam and Hailee Winterholler scored six points each. Gotfredson led rebounding with seven and Naomi McNiven, Hannah Stanworth and Kelli McNiven each had five. “Our scoring, rebounding and steals were all very spread throughout the team. Everyone had an opportunity to add something to this game.”

Saturday against Dubois, the Lady Huskies won 54-8, outscoring Dubois 32-3 in the first quarter. “We were hoping this game would be a bit more competitive for us, but it ended up being very similar to our Friday game,” said Haslam. “I had my girls come out and play the whole first quarter, as it was a varsity conference game. We played some of the younger girls, but mainly kept our varsity girls in since the younger ones played most of the game Friday.”

P. Philpott led the team with 21 points and five steals, both Haslam and Stanworth had eight points, S. McNiven had nine points and 13 rebounds and H. Winterholler had 11 rebounds and six points. “The girls did a great job of controlling their pace on offense and playing strong defense throughout the rest of the game. It’s really hard to hold them back when they are doing things well.”

The Lady Huskies will travel to Powell for some stiff competition at the Big Horn Classic, playing Thermopolis and Powell on Friday and Greybull and Lovell on Saturday. “We need games like this to prepare us for what we will see at Regionals, “ said Haslam.
