Husky track qualifiers in Greybull

At the halfway point of the track and field season, the Huskies competed in Greybull last weekend at the Bill Gerrard Memorial Invite.

“We don’t get a lot of perfect track weather days in Wyoming, but we were close to that on Saturday,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “We had our prom later that day, but it was nice to see the kids sacrifice a lot of their day to compete. We’re right in the heart of the season now, so we should be seeing a lot of our toughest workouts happening.”

Burlington saw a lot of success, with many athletes qualifying for state, season bests and a broken school record. Kellen Winters qualified in the 2-mile, Paul McNiven in both hurdle races, Trigdon Aagard in the high jump, Kortney Winterholler in the high jump and saw Sarah McNiven with a season best and first place in the high jump.

“The highlight of the day had to be Kelli McNiven breaking our school record in the mile. The previous record holder, Jessie Michaels, was there at the finish line to congratulate her and give her a hug. Kelli is such a talented freshman and when you combine that with her work ethic, amazing things can happen. She might have the two mile and 800-meter records by the end of the season.”

Another qualifier for the Huskies was their Boys Medley team. “This team was made up of Connor, Kellen, Bradford Davidson and Taft Winters. This was Taft’s first try at the distance and he ran hard. He followed it up with a personal best throw at the discus afterwards. You don’t see that combination of events very often, but that just tells you everything you need to know about Taft. He’s a great example of leadership, worth ethic and positivity that you love to see in a teammate,” said Olson.

The Huskies will compete in Cowley on Saturday at the Grizzly Invitational. Field events will start at 9:30 a.m. along with the 4x800 Relay, with all other running events starting at 10:15 a.m.
