Husky harriers continue to perform well at Worland
With just two meets left in the regular season, Burlington Cross Country Coach Ryan Olson is pleased with where his kids are. “They are improving each week. Some of our toughest workouts are happening right now and the kids are exceeding all my expectations. On Tuesday, we had a grueling track workout in 94-degree weather and the kids did it without complaining. The rewards for these workouts might not come with personal record times now, but after a proper taper and rest before state, we’re confident it will all pay off.”
The middle and high school runners were in Worland on Thursday. “It’s one of our favorite courses,” said Olson. “It’s well attended by teams in the area; it’s usually nice weather and it’s great for spectators.”
In the middle school division, Kellen Winters continued to dominate, finishing in first place one minute and twenty seconds in front of the next runner and the rest of the field of 146 racers. Kelli McNiven placed second on the girls’ side in a field of 104 racers. “I was really pleased with their performances and with Natalie McNiven and Jaxon Buck’s kick at the end of their races. We’ve been working on ‘switching gears’ and using that energy at the end of races and both got personal best times.
“Howard McNiven had another top 10 finish in the high school boys’ race and finished top among the 2A boys. Connor Hoyt and Paul McNiven were not far behind. I’ve loved watching James McNiven work this year as well. He knows that there is a good chance he will need a great race at state this year to help reach our team goals. His times continue to improve and his persistent work ethic is wonderful to see,” said Olson.
This week the middle school will travel to Thermopolis Thursday with the girls running at 2 and the boys at 2:30. The high schoolers will race in Cody Thursday, with girls starting at 3:15 and boys at 3:55 p.m.
