Huskies with two conference wins
The Huskies earned two big conference wins last week against Meeteetse and Dubois.
Burlington played in Meeteetse on Thursday night. “We had a season high of 18 assists, which is awesome for our development as a team,” said Coach Kirby Winland. “We also had a season low for turnovers, which again was a promising step in the right direction.”
The game was tight with the score tied at 13 at the end of the first quarter, but the Huskies held the Longhorns to just three points in the second quarter while they scored 15. The rest of the game was close but Burlington continued to work and won 63-47. “Meeteetse offered tough competition and it took everything we had to slow Max (Potas) down enough to get the win,” said Winland. “We had some boys do a great job stepping up and accepting the challenge of guarding a great player like Max.”
Bitner Philpott led the Huskies with 22 points, including six 3s. Weston Gotfredson had 18 points and nine rebounds.
At home on Saturday, the Huskies dominated the game, outscoring the Rams in all quarters on their way to a 71-33 win. “Our boys did a good job finding backside looks, which we have been trying to get to all year, which makes us a better team offensively,” Winland said.
Rykael Andrew led the Huskies with 13 points and seven rebounds. Paul McNiven had 12 points and three steals. Gotfredson had seven rebounds and eight points.
On Friday and Saturday, the Huskies will head to Powell for the Big Horn Basin Hoops Classic. They will face Powell on Friday with the JV at noon and the varsity tipoff at 1:30 and Glenrock, with the JV at 3 and varsity tip off at 4:30 p.m. Game play on Saturday will be determined by Friday’s pool play results.
“This upcoming week will be a challenge that we haven’t seen this year, the intensity and physicality will be greater than anything we have seen thus far. Our aim is to continue to work as a team and attack the challenge,” said Winland.
