Huskies take 2nd and 3rd and Regionals
1A and 2A West Regionals were held in Shoshoni over the weekend and the Huskies went in with a repeating championship in mind. Despite some impressive individual performances and a strong team effort, Burlington’s men’s team placed 2nd with 151 points in front of Snake River in 3rd with 111 points and behind Saratoga with 164 points. Another strong team effort and some outstanding individual performances led to the Burlington women’s team placing 3rd with 135 points, right behind Saratoga in 2nd with 136 points and Cokeville in 1st with 158 points.
“There were some excellent performances this year that the team can be proud of. It’s always a well-run meet where kids always have the opportunity to do their best. Although the boys’ team’s second place finish was a little hard to swallow, we all knew that we had made a conscious choice to rest some of our best athletes for the state meet and allow a couple who already prequalified to heal up from some minor illnesses and injuries. We’re hopefully all at one-hundred percent by next weekend. The girls can be proud of their third-place finish as well.”
On the men’s side, the scoring was led by distance runners Kellen Winters, Bradford Davidson and Connor Hoyt. “They have been steady in their races all year long and this weekend was no different. Placing multiple kids in the top 4 spots in the 800-meter, mile and two mile have been our bread and butter all year. These boys also make our relays really strong, and we hope to see the same pattern happen at State. I suppose when we’re bringing the 2A state cross country champions onto the track team, we had better be prepared to score some points.
But they had a really strong supporting cast. Freshman Chase Bassett won the Pole Vault and fellow freshman Hyrum McNiven had a really impressive triple jump, winning that event. Paul McNiven always provides the senior leadership on the team, scoring high in the hurdle races and the 400 meters. Taft Winters and Matt Tempany always provide some much needed points in the throwing events.”
On the women’s side, freshman Kelli McNiven won the 800 meters, the mile and 2 mile as well as helped bring in the title in the Medley Relay, after receiving the baton in 5th place. Sarah McNiven won the High jump, Adison Haslam won the triple jump, Lauren Gotfredson won the Pole Vault, Kortney Winterholler took 3rd in the long jump and the 4X400 and 4X800 relay teams placed 3rd.
The Huskies will compete at the State Track Meet in Casper on Thursday through Saturday. “We’re really looking forward to the State Meet this weekend. We work all year to be doing our absolute best in May, and it should be fun to show what we can do on our biggest stage,” said Olson.
