With an abundance of sunshine and light winds, Burlington hosted its home track meet on Friday. With five other schools competing, the Burlington boys’ team took second place with 231.75 points behind Thermopolis’ 273.50 and on the girls’ side, Burlington edged out Rocky Mountain with 144.50 to Rocky’s 126.5 points.
“The story of the day was probably the performance of our girls team,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “I’m so proud of these girls. Many of them were trying some new events, and I think a lot of them were surprised by how well they did. Some of our normal point earners didn’t compete because of injuries or family trips. It was great to see the rest of the girls step up.”
Brynn Preator led the Lady Huskies and qualified for state in two events, the 400-meter dash, with a time of 1:04, and the high jump, clearing 5 feet, a personal best. Hailee Winterholler threw the discus over 87 feet, also a personal best.
The boys’ team has been plagued by injuries. “I can’t remember a year when there have been so many hurt kids this early in the year,” said Olson. “A lot of them just need time to heal. The tricky part is maintaining that fitness level in the meantime. Some tried other events that wouldn’t affect their injuries; hopefully we’ll continue to heal up and be ready to peak at the right time.”
Six of the Huskies saw qualifying times and marks with Howard McNiven qualifying in both the mile with a time of 4:49 and the two mile with a time of 10:54. Paul McNiven joined him in qualifying in the mile with a time of 4:55 and the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 18.11. Weston Gotfredson qualified with a mark of 5-6 in the high jump and 11-0 in the pole vault. Kyler Winters aqualified in the pole vault, clearing 13 feet. Joe Bassett qualified in the high jump with a jump of 5-6 and Hunter Aagard qualified in the shot put with a distance of 40 feet, his personal best.
“The volunteers and workers should be commended for helping run a great meet, which takes a lot of work,” said Olson.
The Huskies head to Greybull on Saturday for the Bill Gerrard Memorial Invite. Field and running events start at 10 a.m.
