From the Huddle
Our recent matchup against the Kelly Walsh JV squad marked our final non-conference game of the year. From here on out, every single game will play a direct correlation on whether we make the playoffs and if we will play at home or on the road as we head into three straight conference games.
The boys played extremely well, considering how difficult it is to prepare when you’re playing an 11-man school who is getting a taste for 6-man football for the first time. This past week, our motto was “Embrace the Unexpected.” It worked out well, as we were able to throw a lot of looks at our kids, which not only helped this week, but will help us adjust in future games as we needed to think on the fly.
The coaching staff always stresses being able to win all three phases of the game, and we did that by scoring on offense, defense, and special teams. Corbyn Godfrey hit paydirt twice and rushed for 40 yards on 4 carries, while also adding 9 tackles and a fumble recovery on defense. Jaxson Womack had 76 yards on 6 carries with 1 rushing TD, along with a scoop and score on defense, 7 tackles, and a pass breakup. Alan Landis anchored the defense with 5 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, while Kenneth McClure added 20 yards on the ground with a score and 2 receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown. To start the second half, Rocco Huggins opened things up with an electric 71-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Next week, we have a long week of practice before we hit the road to go take on the Hulett Red Devils. They have a solid tradition of football and are very well coached. We will need to be ready to take on a solid team under the lights next Saturday to continue our winning ways. We hope to see the Rebel Road Warriors on the sidelines next Saturday! Go Rebels!
