Greybull schools receive grant for social media-mental health presentation

Public invited to attend

The entire community is invited to a presentation on the impacts of social media at the Greybull High School auditorium on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. 

“I think as our world is changing, having a better understanding of what our kids are exposed to on a day-to-day basis is really important,” said Greybull Middle School Principal Cadence Wipplinger. With trends consistently suggesting negative connections between social media and young people’s mental health, she encouraged all to attend. 

Greybull schools received mental health funding from the state to cover the cost of the presentation, which was dreamed up in coordination with Stan Flitner and Carol Bell’s Shell-based mental health awareness group. The speaker, Max Stossel, is the founder of Social Awakening, an organization designed to help young people navigate the modern world. 

Before becoming a speaker, Stossel worked in Silicon Valley with major brands in the social media field. His presentation will include explanations on how social media is constructed to become addictive, as well as how it impacts mental health, social lives, focus, social skills, productivity and self-worth. 

Separate assemblies will be held for middle and high school students during school hours, but Wipplinger encouraged parents and community members to attend and learn more about the impacts too. Thursday’s event is free and open to the public.
