Greybull’s Coenen is state champion

This past weekend Greybull Basin Athletic Club (GBAC) wrestlers stepped onto one of the biggest stages of the season at the Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Association State Tournament in Casper at the Ford Wyoming Center. 

“The commitment it takes to prepare, show up, and compete at this level does not go unnoticed,” said GBAC secretary Kate Hetzel. “We had a great group representing GBAC, and every single wrestler battled, grew, and showed what this club is about.”

With over 2,500 wrestlers competing over the three-day tournament and 16 mats in one space, it was an awe-inspiring atmosphere. The athletes wrestled folkstyle on Friday, freestyle on Saturday, and Greco on Sunday. Athletes were divided up amongst age groups and weight-classes. 

GBAC came home with one state champion in that of Briston Coenen, of Greybull, who stood on top of the podium in the 8U folkstyle competition. Many other wrestlers also placed with some in all three events. 

Across all three styles combined, GBAC finished 18th out of 50 teams, “a huge accomplishment at a tournament of this size and level of competition,” said Hetzel. 

“We are proud of the placers, proud of the growth, and proud of the entire group that represented the Greybull Basin Athletic Club this weekend. Huge shoutout to our athletes for stepping up, our coaches for their time and dedication, and our parents for the constant support behind the scenes.”
