Gardner search called off after 20 days
Search and Rescue operations in the case of lost Minnesota hiker Grant Gardner have ceased after 20 days scouring the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
“In consultation with family members, I have made the heartbreaking and difficult decision to suspend active search and rescue operations for Mr. Gardner,” Big Horn County Sheriff Ken Blackburn said in a press release on Aug. 20.
Rescue efforts began on Aug. 1, when the case was reported to BHCSO. Gardner reportedly undertook a planned three-day hike through the Mistymoon Lake area to summit Cloud Peak. A text message to his wife from the summit on July 29 was the last contact anyone had with Gardner.
Since then, SAR teams from seven counties have assisted in the search, with sky, foot, horse and dog teams from various organizations gridding the area. Wyoming DCI and FBI forensics teams were also utilized.
“Our teams have exhausted all resources and personnel over the last 20 days. With weather conditions and other factors updated in our search models, we have to face the reality that the most optimistic survival odds have run out,” Blackburn said in his release.
Reportedly, SAR teams will rest before beginning search and recovery efforts as time and evidence allow.
“On behalf of the family, they want to personally thank each and every one of you who have offered time, resources, and prayers on their behalf. While grieving, they are humbled, and grateful beyond words,” Blackburn said.
“Many team members feel like they have lost a battle by not finding Grant at this time; however, it was not for a lack of effort on anyone’s part. We hope clues will surface that will help bring a final closure to this tragedy in due time.”
