Encouraging respectful dialogue in letters

Dear editor:

The Letters to the Editor section of our newspaper serves as a valuable forum for the exchange of ideas. However, we should be careful to not let these exchanges devolve into personal attacks.

American politics has become increasingly divisive, much due to the rhetoric and actions of our nation’s leaders. Name calling and insults have become the norm.

As the strength of our communities is proportional to our level of individual cooperation and mutual respect, I would encourage the local authors of political opinions to focus on the issues without singling out their neighbors.

We should honor each other’s viewpoints even though they differ from our own.
