Devotions ... The third day of Christmas

Most of us have already returned to our normal lives by the third day of Christmas. We have spent advent (since Thanksgiving or even before) awaiting Christmas Day. By the third day we have picked up and thrown away all the wrapping paper. Many toys are already broken. There might still be enough turkey for a turkey sandwich. Whoo! Christmas is finally over and now we can get on to the new year.

It’s okay to say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

A few years back there was a big ado about how people who say “Happy Holidays” are trying to take “Christ” out of Christmas.
We can say both. There are many holidays from Nov. 20 to Jan. 24 including Thanksgiving, New Years, Hanukkah, Diwali (festival of lights), Los Posadas (which honors Joseph and Mary’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem), St. Nicholas Day and Boxing Day.
It was also said that some people were offended by the word Christmas, so we shouldn’t say it.

Myths are just stories we tell ourselves and others to make sense of the world around us.  Myths convey beliefs or values and attempt to tell truths.  In their effort to tell the truth, myths may exaggerate or misrepresent things.  Sometimes this misrepresentation is innocent, while other times it is used as a tool to regulate or manipulate people.  Myths can be used to give a sense of power and control over an overwhelming situation.

Loading an unwilling bull into a trailer can be daunting, even if it is for its own good. Bulls  tend to be testy and their size presents a special challenge. My dad’s approach involved roping the bull, dragging it to the trailer, attaching a block and tackle and then – after a good deal of cussing and a lathered-up saddle horse or two – we might wrench it into the trailer. We never hurt a bull, but we had some impromptu rodeos in the process.

“People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.” We have all heard that adage, but isn’t there one about people who live in log or wood sided houses? There should be and it should have to do with woodpeckers and squirrels.

Thank you to all who put up Christmas lights. If you need a pick-me-up, get out and see them. Families loading up in a vehicle and driving the streets of Basin has been a family tradition for decades and decades. I would venture to guess that it has been since the 1930s.

All dogs go to Heaven and their girls do too

When our youngest, Makaila, was 13 she decided she wanted a dog.  
She was very serious about taking on the role of pet owner and eagerly explored different breeds in hopes of finding the perfect pet. After hours of research, she had narrowed down her dream dog to either a Labrador Retriever or German Shepard.
Knowing that either breed would be a good fit for our girl, we mused as she listed out the pros and cons of each and made plans to save money so she could buy a puppy from a breeder.

Devotions: Advent makes us wait for that which has already come

Advent is about waiting; not so much about waiting for Christmas, for there really is none of that during Advent, no waiting for Christmas. The world cannot wait, and so, to the world, it has been Christmas for quite a while already. Well, there are those who know that there is a thing called “Advent”, and call their pre-Christmas Christmas activities “Advent”, probably out of a sense that it sounds more Christian.
