Rebels climb in conference standings after win over Ten Sleep
The Riverside Rebels continued their surge up the conference standings by steamrolling Ten Sleep 42-6 Friday night to cap a successful homecoming week.
With the win, the Rebels moved into third place in the 1A North, behind only Burlington and Hulett. The Rebels face the Huskies in the final week of the season.
Coach Matthew Jensen’s team never trailed, lead 14-0 after one, 36-0 at the half and 42-6 after three.
“Offensively, we continued to communicate our blocking assignments well, which in turn helped us again run the ball well,” Jensen said.
The Rebels rushed for more than 300 yards, averaging 8.3 yards per carry, and were effective in their play-action passing, completing 5-of-8 for 107 yards and four touchdowns.
Brendan Powell carried eight times for 147 yards and a touchdown, Jaxson Womack 10 times for 115 yards and a touchdown, Corbyn Godfrey 11 times for 51 yards and Zack Kuntz three times for 10 yards.
Through the air, Gavyn Cervantes completed 4-of-7 for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Paul Stone completed his only passing attempt for a 29-yard touchdown.
Stone had two receptions for 61 yards, Kuntz had two receptions for 17 yards and Mason Brown had one reception for 29 yards.
“Defensively, we executed our game plan well and played excellent team defense,” said Jensen.
Standouts included Stone (1 assisted tackle, 3 unassisted tackles, 2 pass break-ups, 1 forced fumble), Kuntz (1 solo, 4 assist, 3 fumble recoveries), Camden Schriner (2 solos, 2 assists, 2 TFLs, 1 sack), Cervantes (1 solo, 5 assists, 1 interception) and Kenneth McClure (4 solos, 2 TFLs, 1 pass break-up).
“Despite the fun distractions of homecoming week, the team focused and delivered a strong performance Friday night, providing a perfect ending to the week’s festivities,” said Jensen.
As he looked ahead to this week, Jensen said, “One area I would like to see us improve on is consistency in practice as we prepare for upcoming opponents.”
This week
The Rebels are on the road this week, with a 6 p.m. contest on tap Friday in Midwest. The Oilers have yet to win a game, but Jensen is not overlooking them.
“We can’t underestimate this young, scrappy team,” he said. “With playoff contention and seeding on the line, we must maintain focus and continue our daily grind. Go Rebels!”
