Lady Huskies win 2 and lose 2 at weekend tournament
It wasn’t the successful week the Lady Huskies were hoping for, but Coach Cheryl Haslam said she still saw some positive things. “I think that we can play with every team that we played over the weekend. This week, it seemed we really struggled in the third quarter of games. We come out slow and our opponents come out strong. We dig ourselves a hole that we can’t seem to find a way out of.”
Tuesday, the Lady Huskies hosted Rocky Mountain for their first home game. Burlington came out strong and led after the first quarter. “They were confident in their play, running an offense and working well together. Then Rocky started back dooring on their offense and hitting their posts and we struggled to recover from that,” said Haslam. “Rocky is a tough team and emotions are always high when we play them, but we should have been able to play them closer than we did.” The Lady Huskies lost, 63-42. Jessie Michaels led all scorers with 27 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Breanne Walker followed with four points, five rebounds and seven steals.
Burlington traveled to Shoshoni on Thursday and Friday to play in the Wrangler Invite, first matching up against Saratoga for the second time in two weeks. The Lady Huskies won 43-32. They had a strong second quarter, scoring 19 points, but struggled again in the third quarter with only six points. “We need to find a way to come out strong and play for 4 quarters. They played very similarly against us as they did last week. They play man to man on Jessie and zone on the rest of the team.” Michaels still contributed 15 points and seven rebounds. Paxton Philpott also added 15 points. “Paxton played a great offensive game. She did great coming off the bench for us.”
Kemmerer was the next opponent for the Lady Huskies. “We weren’t sure what to expect, but we knew it would be a good game because when we played them last year at this tournament, we went into double overtime. We started out strong again and had a great first quarter. We got lost a few times on defense in the second half and let their best scorer go on a run. That hurt us and we made great efforts to recover from it, but we came up short.” The Lady Huskies lost, 43-41. Michaels led again with 24 points, five rebounds and nine steals and Walker added eight points.
The last game of the tournament was against Cokeville. “This is always a good game for us because it’s the only time we will see them before regionals. We played right with them for the first half but once again, the third quarter blues prevailed. They really came out to play and we did not. They got several fast breaks and we struggled to find who we were guarding on defense. They outscored us 22-10 in the third quarter. This did not help the girls’ confidence and they struggled to come back. I know that we can play with them, so it was hard to watch them try several different things on offense and see it not come together.” The final was 55-32. Walker and Michaels each scored nine points.
The Lady Huskies will be working on their offense and running plays over the break and will be back in the New Year to face off against Meeteetse on January 5th.
