Huskies top Kelly Walsh’s JV for Homecoming
Starting the week with a JV contest against Greybull and finishing with Kelly Walsh’s JV, the Huskies had a winning Homecoming week.
Burlington’s JV won against Greybull, 44-20. “It was a great opportunity to get everyone some game experience. It is also a good opportunity for young team leaders to step up on the field,” said Coach Trent Aagard. “I thought our young guys did a good job of playing with tempo in the second half. For Greybull, playing on a six-man field takes away a portion of their playbook, so it wasn’t ideal for them, but it’s good anytime you can get reps. In all, I’m happy that we were able to have a few more JV games this year. It will help those guys develop.”
The original game on the schedule for Homecoming was cancelled and the Huskies picked up the game against Kelly Walsh, winning 58-13. “Their JV has been looking for a game because they are having a tough time getting games for those boys. Their team was made up of juniors and sophomores. It was cool that they came up here so we could have a Homecoming game. I think they played a nine-man game last week and this was their first six-man game. We started pretty fast and got up early. We had a bit of a lull, but I saw some growth and improvement.”
The Huskies had 185 rushing yards and 181 passing yards. Taft Winters had three receiving touchdowns, Chute Cauffman had two receiving touchdowns and Paul McNiven, Trigdon Aagard and Pierce Peterson each added a rushing touchdown and Kole Walker’s touchdown came from a 53 yard kickoff return. Matt Tempany and Orion Wright each had a successful PAT kick. “I thought Taft, Matt and Chute made some really good contested catches,” said Aagard. “The line did a good job blocking. It was good to see Paul have some good carries and Parker and Kole both ran well.”
Defensively, the Huskies had over 50 tackles spread across their defense and 148 yards from special team returns.
“James (McNiven), Taft, Parker (Cook) and Paul kept good pressure up front. The back end did a good job also, which included Kole, Matt, Trigdon (Aagard), Cole (Gotfredson) and Chase (Bassett). Overall it was a good experience for us,” said Aagard.
The Huskies will play Riverside in Basin on Friday with a kickoff at 7 p.m.
