The Huskies joined other 2A and 3A teams in the Big Horn Basin Hoops Classic held this weekend in Thermopolis and Worland, facing Wind River, Powell, Lovell and Worland. “We knew it would be a hard weekend, playing against those bigger teams, who will likely go on to repeat their successes from last year,” said Coach Dale Cook.

Wind River was up first for Burlington and the Huskies controlled the entire game, jumping out to a 28-9 lead at halftime. They continued to push through the second half, eventually winning  57-25.  Kellen Winters led the team with 14 points. Bitner Philpott was close behind with 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. Chase Bassett added nine points and Matt Tempany added five rebounds and four points.

Powell was next on the docket. “I thought we played with them pretty well. They got us in the first quarter, they were on fire from behind the 3-point line, but we really won the second half,” said Cook. Despite the Huskies out scoring Powell in the second half, the Panthers took the game, 72-59. Philpott led the team with 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. K. Winters added 13 points, including three 3’s and M. James McNiven led defensively with 10 boards and 11 points.

Burlington faced Lovell next, the 3A champions from last year, and the Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Huskies. Lovell won, 62-29. Kole Walker led the Huskies with eight points. K. Winters added six points and six rebounds and Bassett added six points.

Worland was the last game for the Huskies and while they kept it closer, Burlington fell to Worland, 62-41.  Philpott led the team with 11 points, two steals and three assists. Bassett added 10 points and two steals and Tempany led defensively with 11 rebounds and three points.

“Overall, the tournament was good for us. We had a good team effort, with several in double figures. It exposed some weaknesses and showed us some things we’re typically good at. Even though we lost three of four, it was still good overall and a good growing experience for us,” said Cook.

The Huskies will be on the road this week, with Ten Sleep on Friday, the JV at 5:30 and varsity at 7 p.m. and then St. Stephens on Saturday with the JV at noon and the varsity tipoff at 3 p.m.
