Huskies add more broken records
The Huskies had a record breaking day in Thermopolis on Friday at the Bobcat Track and Field Invitational. “We’ve had a lot of great performances in Thermopolis, but I’m not sure I can ever remember so many school records falling in one meet,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “Our 4X800 relay started off the day breaking a school record set 26 years ago. Connor Hoyt, Kellen Winters, Paul McNiven and Bradford Davidson eclipsed the old record by ten seconds, running 8:23. Our distance kids have been going after that record pretty hard for the past four years and it was fun to see them finally get it. Paul later broke the 300 hurdles school record set in 1997, running 40.5 seconds. Finally, Kelli McNiven broke the 800-meter school record originally set in 2001. This adds to her mile and 2 mile records set earlier this year. We sometimes forget that she’s just a freshman. She’s going to do some amazing things in the next few years.”
Other notable performances on the day were Davidson taking first in the 800-meters. Burlington’s boys 4X400 relay team took 4th, Trigdon Aagard took 4th in the High Jump and Matt Tempany took 4th in the Discus. “Our high jumpers also had a good day, with Trigdon and Parker Cook both getting personal bests and qualifying for state. Sarah McNiven won on the girl’s side. Hyrum McNiven also took first place in the Triple jump, getting his personal best and posting the top jump in the state to this point.
“I’m so happy for these kids. They’re such a fun bunch to work with. Practice never seems like a chore. They’re all such good friends and push each other to do better in their workouts. It’s nice to have practices that you look forward to going to every day,” said Olson.
Burlington will head to Shoshoni on Friday and Saturday for Regionals. Field events will start on Friday at noon with running events starting at 1:45 and field events starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning with running events starting at 10 a.m. “These next two weeks should be a lot of fun. Both the boys and girls have the chance to do some things that haven’t been done before in Burlington. Our Boys will be going for their 8th consecutive Region Championship this weekend and their 4th State Championship in a row. The girls will also be in the mix for trophies in both Shoshoni and Casper. It doesn’t get much better than track meets in May, and this year shouldn’t be any exception.”
