Hole In The Wall Tour slated May 24
History buffs have a chance to visit the famous Hole-In-The-Wall gunfight and hideout on May 24.
Historian Clay Gibbons has guided many a person to this historic site and will be doing so again this year.
The “hole” isn’t really a hole. It is a pass in the Big Horn Mountains. Outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid used it as a hideaway in the late 1800’s. The isolation, grazing and water sources made it ideal to hide stolen livestock. The cabin that was once onsite has been relocated to Old Trail Town in Cody.
In 1897, there was a gunfight between the Hole-In-The-Wall gang, U.S. Marshall Service and men from the CY Ranch.
Gibbons added that attendees will see a 1500-year-old Indian Trail, the gunfight site, an opportunity to climb to the top of the hole and visit where the cabin was. Another stop is the Alex Ghent homestead where stories will be told.
The tour will start at the Quality Inn in Thermopolis at 7:30 a.m. May 24. Bring a lunch and plenty to drink. You will need to bring a 4-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle. There will be some walking to get to the top of the hole.
Gibbons states it is a memory people won’t forget. Contact Gibbons to reserve a spot at 307-388-4145 or Claygibbons@hotmail.com.
