GHS, RHS students competing in indoor track

Worland High School’s indoor track team has a strong south Big Horn County component this season.

Blade Baer, Jesse Brown, Henri Maas, Carter Peasley, Cruz Sorenson, Triston Gross, Addison Coscarelli and Wyatt Whaley, all of Greybull, and Cade Bell of Riverside are competing with the Warriors.

The team has attended two meets, competing at the Jan. 17 Natrona Invite in Casper and the Jan. 24 Campbell County Invite in Gillette.

Tracey Wiley is the team’s head coach, returning to a role she held more than two decades ago.

“We love having (the Greybull-Basin kids),” she said. “It’s been fun getting to know them.”

She can’t explain the increased interest in her program coming from south Big Horn County.

“I don’t think it’s anything we did,” she said. “They’re just interested in doing something in the winter, they like track and this is an opportunity for them to come over here and compete.

“Mike Whaley comes over every day and coaches our throwers, so it’s been beneficial having him as a part of our program, too.  They come over (Monday through Thursday), picking up Cade Bell in Basin.”

The first two indoor track meets have been well attended, with up to 200 kids competing in some events like the 55 and the 200.  If runners, throwers and jumpers are looking for validation in their placements rather than their times, distances and heights, indoor track can be challenging.

“What I tell my kids is, only look at the 3A kids,” Wiley said. “You may be, say, 12th overall, but second among the 3A kids.  Those are the ones we’ll be competing against at our state meet.

“Same goes for the kids further down the list.  Just knock out the 4A kids.” 

The Warriors are off this weekend, but return to action in early February.
