Cross Country teams look to repeat
Burlington’s Cross Country team has started their 2026 season with enthusiasm and drive. There are 24 middle and high school student-athletes from Burlington and Basin. “I love the connection between these two schools,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “Any existing rivalries from other sports are put aside as we become one team. Friendships are made and we become united in reaching our season goals.”
The High School boys’ team will look to once again be 2A state champions and hope to win their fourth championship in five years. “Sophomore Kellen Winters returns as the 2A individual state champion, as well as Senior Connor Hoyt with the 3rd fastest time. We’ve got some nice senior leadership with Bryant Casey and Brian O’Barr, as well as some speed with incoming freshmen Jaxon Buck and Spencer Hamilton. Ariel Cordova has been with us the past two years and foreign exchange student Enzo Goulart has also joined the team, as well as several middle school students.”
The High School girls’ team will be without state runner-up Kelli McNiven, “Hopefully a few more girls from Basin and Burlington will be willing to give Cross Country a try and rebuild our girls team which finished 2nd at Conference last year.”
“We have 12 middle school kids out as well this year. As in prior years, we’ll be running most of our practices together, enjoying a lot of local trails, hitting our person and team goals and taking advantage of our beautiful Wyoming fall weather. We’re also looking forward to hosting Regionals this year for the first time.”
The first Middle School meet will be held on Thursday in Cody. The High School will compete the next day in Billings.
