Huskies repeat as 1A State Track Champions

That the Burlington Huskies won the State 1A track and field championship in Casper last weekend came as no surprise. The surprise was the ease with which it was accomplished. Burlington amassed 128 points, 53 more than those scored by second-place Little Snake River. Finishing in third and fourth were Dubois and Cokeville, with 70 and 65 points, respectively.

Neves AQs in 300-hurdles; four to compete at Track Classic

It has to be a ho-hum day on the track for the Burlington tracksters when just one athlete meets state qualifying standards. But that is what happened in Lovell Saturday. Paige Neves met the AQ mark in the 300-meter hurdles, which makes three (other two are pole vault and 100-hurdles) state events for the senior.

Three Burlington Huskies, Anson George clearing 5-8 in the high jump, Jacob Mancuso with a 20-1 mark in the long jump and Eric McNiven with a first-place time of 2:02.11 in the 800-meters, automatically qualified (AQ) for state during the Warrior Twilight Invitational in Worland Friday. Also meeting AQ time was the 400-meter relay team.

Anderson perseveres through injury, illness

Wyoming’s 2009 scholar-athletes were honored recently in Laramie.
The top prep football Scholar-Athlete for 2009 hails from Sheridan High School. Austin Woodward collected the honor and $2,400 in scholarships from the Wyoming Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame at the organization’s 16th annual banquet Saturday, March 20 in Laramie.

Lady Huskies come from behind
for wins in semifinal and title games

Second mission accomplished. The 1A West Regional Girls Basketball championship trophy is in the hands of the Burlington Lady Huskies, thanks to a 61-51 victory over Meeteetse  Saturday afternoon in Lander. Their third and final mission, the 1A State Championship, lifts off this morning at 9 a.m. at the Casper Events Center where the Lady Huskies will meet Upton. 
Sharing the bracket with Burlington and Upton are Cokeville and Hulett. Coming up the other side are Kaycee, Snake River, Meeteetse and Arvada-Clearmont.

Lady Rebels fall short in state bid; ousted by Rocky Mountain

Rebels thumped by No. 1-ranked Chiefs, No. 4 Greybull next

The Riverside Rebels struggled to keep up with the quick feet and the strong pressure by the No. 1-ranked Wyoming Indian Chiefs at Ethete last Saturday as they fell 106-30.
Coach Brent Winters said while losing by that much is never good, he saw some good things in his players in their first game back after a three-week break. “It was a good experience for us. I knew they were going to pressure us. They backed off the pressure in the second half. At times we were able to break their press,” he said.

Going into the 1A West Regional Track meet this weekend the Burlington Lady Huskies already have 17 automatic state qualifiers covering 11 track and field events and the Husky boys have 18 qualifiers covering 10 events — and the total of 21 events does not include the AQ relay teams. So what more could Coach Albert Henderson and his athletes want? Well, more state qualifiers. Henderson said they had a few athletes who could qualify by finishing in the top eight in individual events, and in the top four relays at regionals.
