It has to be a ho-hum day on the track for the Burlington tracksters when just one athlete meets state qualifying standards. But that is what happened in Lovell Saturday. Paige Neves met the AQ mark in the 300-meter hurdles, which makes three (other two are pole vault and 100-hurdles) state events for the senior.
The boys” team amassed 129 points to take second behind Powell with its 208 points. For the Lady Huskies it was 114 points and third place as they finished behind Lovell and Powell, respectively.
“I thought as a team we did well to place second in boys and third in girls. Those were good team performances,” said Coach Albert Henderson. Individually, Henderson said, “There were no big surprises, but no disappointments either. They did about what was expected of them.”
If there was a surprise, it would be seeing Brecka Carrizales back on track. The senior underwent ACL surgery after state basketball and was recently cleared to do some jogging. Carrizales took it a step further and started practicing with the team.
“We let her run a leg on our 4x800 relay and she threw the shot. She really wants to be back. We’re hoping she can be in shape enough to contribute by the end of the season,” Henderson said.
With the small field, five teams entered in both of the divisions, events went quickly. Running events started at 11:30 and the meet was over by 2 p.m. That short time didn’t deter Eric McNiven, who crammed in first place finishes in the 100 and 400 and added second place finishes in both the 200 and 800 races.
The Huskies made a very brief appearance in Meeteetse Friday, but returned quickly to Burlington due to the weather.
The Huskies will be in Thermopolis this weekend with a twilight meet scheduled Friday afternoon and a pre-regional meet on Saturday. Events start at 1 p.m. both days.
Four Huskies noticeable by their absence will be Shawn Christiansen, Neves, McNiven and Lyndsey Wardell. The four will be competing in the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper —Christiansen and Neves in the pole vault, McNiven in the 400 and Wardell in the 300-hurdles. According to Henderson, Wardell might also compete in the high jump.
The meet reaches across all four classes of school and invites the athletes who hold the best times, distances, jumps, leaps and throws to go head-to-head in a single meet.
