The Riverside High School couldn’t have asked for a nicer day for their first track meet in 15 years as the weather seemed near perfect Friday afternoon.
“All the coaches said what a great track meet it was and that it was a fast track,” Coach Steve Olson said. He added that he appreciated all the volunteer help from staff, parents and members of the public that made the meet a success.
“Everything went well and we were done at a decent time,” he said. “The kids loved competing at home.”
The weather seemed perfect for some of the Riverside athletes as well with Kinli Vigil automatically qualifying for the state meet next month in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.12. She placed first in the event, as well as racing to first in the 200 at 28.12 and fourth in the 400 at 67.37.
Also competing for the Lady Rebels Friday were Ashley Earl and Josie Taylor, competing in the shot put and discus. Earl threw 46-5 and Taylor 45-1 in the discus. In the shot put, Taylor threw 20-2 and Earl was 14-7.
For the Rebels, Brynnt Wood threw a personal best in the shot put at 41-6 to take third. Keith Kelley threw 33-0, Dan Koch 27-4 and Bryce Johnson 25-2.
Wood was fourth in the discus with a toss of 112-9. Koch threw 74-11, Kelley 74-4, Joe Hoffman 71-1 and Bryce Johnson 59-0.
Coach Olson said Clint Getzfreid has a season best jump in the long jump at 16-10, placing sixth. Jeff Ingleheart and Zach Christopherson both jumped 14-5, Jason Getzfreid jumped 13-3, Frankie Getzfreid 11-8 and Andrew Williamson 9-4.
In the triple jump, C. Getzfreid placed fourth with a jump of 33-10. Christopher Nichols jumped 27-9.
Last week Olson said they would be working on getting the high jumpers to reach the opening height at the Riverside meet and the goal was met with C. Getzfreid reaching 4-10 and Christopherson 4-8.
In the track events, Ingleheart, Nichols and Koch, finished second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400-meter run.
J. Getzfreid was fifth in the 800 at 2:25.26. Johnson ran 2:52.00 and Nichols 2:37.69.
The 1,600-meter relay team of Christopherson, J. Getzfreid, Ingleheart and Nichols placed fourth with a time of 4:09.14.
In the 100, Hoffman ran a 12.52, Christopherson 12.87, C. Getzfreid 13.21, F. Getzfreid 14.08 and Williamson 17.00.
In the 200, F. Getzfreid ran 30.36, Williamson 38.79.
Riverside was scheduled to head to Lovell on Saturday, but Olson said they will be competing in Meeteetse on Friday as it is an opportunity to compete in a smaller meet against smaller schools. He said for his young team, it will be good to possibly find some success against smaller schools.
If the weather turns and the meet is cancelled the team will head to Lovell.
Olson said the team is progressing but “it’s going to be slow” since many of the athletes are competing in track for the first time.
