Congratulations on great teamwork

Congratulations to the Huskies and Lady Huskies from Burlington for winning the 1A state championships in boys and girls basketball, respectively.

It’s quite a feat for teams from the same school to win in the same year. Burlington was able to do it back in 1992. My hometown of Thermopolis accomplished the feat just a few years ago as well.

In talking to the players this week one theme rang out loud and clear — teamwork. The players said they were friends on the court, they trusted one another, knew someone would pick up the slack when others were struggling.

Many of the Lady Huskies said the lessons they are learning in basketball they can apply to life. They are right. Life is about teamwork, whether in the workplace or at home.

A wise friend once said, that a spouse must give more than 50 percent because if you only give 50 percent and the other person can’t or isn’t giving 50 percent, then you don’t have 100 percent invested. This philosophy works for any team. Everyone must give 100 percent to ensure that the goal is attainable.

It takes a team to put this newspaper together. Not just the employees in the Basin office, but there are team members in Greybull, Lovell and Powell where the paper is printed. We all must work together and communicate well in order to get the paper laid out and printed on time.

The players also said they had fun and anyone that watched the teams this season could see they had fun. Whether struggling to come-from-behind at regionals, or coaxing to a win that allowed everyone to play, the teams had fun.

While they are excited to win a state title, they understand that it is a game and is meant to be enjoyed. It should be fun. So often you see players get wrapped up in trying to be the best to fulfill dreams of their parents that all the fun is zapped from the activity. But the Huskies and Lady Huskies had the right perspective this year — work hard, work together and have fun.

So we congratulate the Burlington hoops teams not just on winning their state trophies, but in the way they were won — learning lifeskills, working hard, learning to work as a team and depend on each other, all while having fun.
