Fair, food and fun
It’s Big Horn County Fair time with 10 days of activities starting today with the 4-H PACT judging and style review tonight and ending with the demolition derby on Sunday, Aug. 2.
The Big Horn County Fair is not just for youth and it’s not just for those with youth showing animals. There’s much to do for the young and old. Any seamstress may want to check out the designs of the 4-H members at tonight’s style review.
Dog lovers will have a chance to see the obedience work of 4-H members and their dogs Friday. Horse enthusiasts can check out a variety of breeds at Monday’s halter show and watch riders perform Tuesday.
Then the fair gets real busy with livestock shows, swine, sheep and beef, as well as poultry, rabbits and goats. There is also the quilt show that showcases the talents of many area quilters.
Adults can get into the act with the open class shows, as many will showcase the flowers, baked goods and photos. Come on down to the fairgrounds next week and take a look.
There’s plenty to do in the evenings with the paid grandstand events that include the always fun pig wrestling, rodeo and the Vocal Trash concert.
If you’re looking for something new for lunch or dinner, there are always fine food vendors at the fair, and the food, along with the free stage acts provides a great social atmosphere. It’s a time to get reacquainted with your neighbor, or say howdy to some people you haven’t met yet.
With the fair being a countywide event, it’s an opportunity to get to know some folks from the north side of the county.
And, thanks to Big Horn County Rural Electric, there should be no problem hearing any announcements at the fair with a fine sound system installed earlier this month. It worked great during the recent Horse Fun Day.
Don’t let the next 10 days go by without partaking in some activity at the fair. You’ll be glad you did.

David Blair from Sheridan is looking to move his Tastie Foods International company to Big Horn County. Blair offers healthy foods, specifically snack foods like raisins and garbanzo beans in a variety of flavors like sour apple, root beer, jalapeño and licorice as a healthy alternative for those wanting to eat right, for diabetics and for those needing gluten-free alternatives.
The company is looking at purchasing and re-opening the old canning factory near Cowley. We wish the company luck as the food is tasty, just as the name says, and any new factory would be a boost to a sluggish economy.

This weekend is loaded with lots of fun with Pioneer Days celebrated in Burlington on Friday and Saturday. There will be basketball, golf, volleyball a 5k run, parade and a family dance to end the weekend.
Hyattville will be the host of the 100th annual Old Timer’s Day. We congratulate them on their centennial. It’s a testimony to the hard work, dedication and volunteerism that goes back a century, starting in Basin.
There is a parade and dance planned there, as well as live music, street fair and farmer’s market and the Guardians of the Range will be honoring historic ranches.
Come on out and have some fun this weekend and gear up for the fun-filled week of fair.
