Jerry Lewis
Oct. 7, 1930 - June 21, 2009
Jerry Lewis, age 78, passed on at the West Park Hospital in Cody on Sunday, June 21, 2009.
Jerry was born on Oct. 7, 1930, in Manderson to Bertha and Roy Lewis. His grandparents were W.O. and Stella Lewis and Tola and Oscar Hoback.
Jerry grew up on the Lewis Ranch, Lower Nowood, Ten Sleep, and graduated from Ten Sleep High School. He was a ranch hand on Lower Nowood.
He married his high school sweetheart, Nora Marie Alexander, in 1951, a marriage, which lasted a lifetime of 58-1/2 years. They had two sons, Monte Guy and Kevin Roy.
Jerry worked for his father-in-law, Guy Alexander on Rogers Farm, Orchard Bench, near Basin, raising sugar beets, grain and beans. When Guy retired, sons-in-law, Jerry Lewis and Mel Green formed a farm partnership (Lewis and Green) and continued farming. It was a partnership that lasted 25 years. During that time they were “Top 10” beet growers for 7-8 years.
Rodeo was Jerry’s delight. He was a calf roper and team roper. He would have quit calf roping, thinking he was too old at the age of 40. Nora spoke up and said, “You’re just getting good at it; why quit?” — so he roped calves another 20 years while Nora sweated at the rodeos. Into his 70s, Jerry team roped at his friend Roy Decker’s Arena, his favorite winter playground. His sons, daughter-in-law Renee, three grandsons and their wives, and four ‘grands’ were his pride. A fellow roper said of Jerry (years ago) that he was the “nicest cowboy” he ever knew.
In lieu of flowers an account has been established at Security State Bank, Box 531, Basin, Wyo. 82410 for a memorial fund to be decided at a later date.
