Leon Lyman Sanders
Aug. 13, 1931 - Jan. 22, 2009
Funeral services for Leon Lyman Sanders will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Latter-day Saints located at 525 W. 7th St. in Powell. Leon, 77, died Jan. 22, at his home in Powell.
He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Basin, the second of eight children of Elden and Isabelle Lyman Sanders. He grew up in Otto with short stints in San Diego and San Francisco when his father helped with the war efforts. He graduated from Greybull High School in 1949. An all-state tackle on the Buff football team, Leon was awarded a football scholarship to Montana State University.
He married Eve Loraine Henry Dec. 14, 1951, in Billings. In their 57 years of marriage, they built three family homes together and ran Sanders Plumbing and Heating as a partnership. He was a strong supporter of Eva when she opened the Bargain Yard in Powell and the Furniture Connection in Worland.
As a youth, Leon had many jobs, and he had three careers as an adult. For 22 years he worked for Marathon Pipeline, serving in Greybull, Nebraska, Illinois, the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. After retiring from Marathon, he and his son Butch worked in construction for several years until he and Eva opened the plumbing business in August 1976. When Leon retired, his sons Steve and Calvin bought the business. Leon had many skills and used them to invent creative solutions to problems both at work and home. He was a hard worker and gained the respect of his co-workers.
Leon served on the Park County Planning and Zoning Commission and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
His parents, his brother Grant and sister-in-law Patty, and granddaughters Victoria Gomez and Jamie Curry, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife; his children and their spouses, Sharon Sanders of Pocatello, Idaho; Butch and Diana Sanders of Cheyenne, Bonnie Sanders Curry of Chicago, Chris and Anita Sanders Pelletier of Powell, Melanie and Ken Sanders-Smith of Washington, D.C., Steve and Sherry Sanders of Powell and Calvin and Jodie Sanders of Powell; four brothers, Richard, Merrill, Elden and Paul; two sisters, Dorothy Lytle and Ellen Gotfredson; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers his family has requested friends honor Leon’s memory through donations to the Leon Sanders Welding Scholarship Endowment at Northwest College Foundation, 231 W. 6th St., Powell, WY 82435
